The ENVSEC partner organisations, in close cooperation with national experts from various ministries and national agencies, as well as NGOs and research institutes, conduct multi-stakeholder analyses of environment and security risks and address identified risks and environmental legacies in four regions: Eastern Europe, South Eastern Europe, Southern Caucasus, and Central Asia. Each region is under the responsibility of an ENVSEC regional desk office.
The ENVSEC approach comprises four main steps:
- assessing the situation on the ground and mapping the problems ("hotspots") in a participatory way;
- drawing the attention of politicians and local inhabitants to these hot spots and gaining recognition and political support;
- developing a corresponding regional work programme and project portfolios; and
- supporting concrete actions and catalysing specific solutions to the identified security concerns on the ground.
